ABSTRACT
Metropolitan optical networks are undergoing major transformations to continue being able provide services that meet the requirements of applications future. The arrival $5G$ will expand possibilities for offering IoT applications, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities while imposing strong pressure on physical infrastructure currently implemented, as well static traffic engineering techniques do not respond in an agile way dynamic heterogeneous nature upcoming patterns. In order guarantee strictest quality service experience users, meeting providers' objectives maintaining acceptable trade-off between cost performance, new architectures metropolitan have been proposed literature, with a growing interest starting from $2017$. However, due proliferation dozen recent years, many questions need be investigated regarding planning, implementation, management these architectures, before they could considered practical application. This work presents comprehensive survey networks. Firstly, main data transmission systems, equipment involved, structural organization metro ecosystems discussed. already established novel presented, highlighting its characteristics application, comparative analysis among is carried out identifying future technological trends. Finally, outstanding research drawn help direct field.
