ABSTRACT
Detection of moving sources over complicated background is important for several reasons. First measuring the astrophysical motion source. Second that such resulting from atmospheric scintillation, color refraction, or reasons a major source false alarms image subtraction methods. We extend Zackay, Ofek, and Gal-Yam formalism to deal with sources. The new method, named translient (translational transient) detector, applies hypothesis testing between stationary moving. It can be used detect distinguish stellar variability motion. For detection, we show superiority proper subtraction, using improvement in receiver-operating characteristic curve. small translation limit, Translient an optimal detector point any direction. Furthermore, it numerically stable, fast calculate, presented closed form. Efficient transient detection requires both statistics statistics: when statistic higher, then artifact likely due test our algorithm on simulated data real images obtained by Large Array Survey Telescope (LAST). demonstrate ability variability, which has potential reduce number transients detection. provide implementation Python MATLAB.
