ABSTRACT
Background Infectious vaginitis is caused primarily by three different groups of microbial pathogens (Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida spp., and Gardnerella vaginalis). The objective this study was to compare the Affirm VPIII assay using a DNA hybridization technique with Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test Gram stain in detection identification these organisms. Methods A total 300 vaginal samples were collected from women that either symptomatic for or asymptomatic being seen routine obstetric gynecological care. presence T. G. vaginalis evaluated VIII (Becton Dickinson, USA), Pap test, method, respectively. Results With assay, 1 (0.3%) patient tested positive 99 (33.0%) patients 18 (6.0%) spp. rates Trichomonas infection, bacterial vaginosis candidiasis method 0.7% versus 0%, 16.3% 35.7%, 1.7% 9.7%, differences between above organisms statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion more sensitive than specific In addition, results are quick obtain simple easy interpret.
