ABSTRACT
Abstract. The dominant modes of variability precipitation for the whole China over past millennium and mechanism governing their spatial structure remain unclear. This is mainly due to insufficient high-resolution proxy records in western China. Numerous tree-ring chronologies have recently been archived publicly available databases through PAGES2k activities, these provide an opportunity refine field reconstructions Based on 479 records, including 371 width chronologies, a isotope chronology, 107 drought/flood indices, we reconstruct half using optimal information extraction method. A total 3631 4189 grid points reconstruction passed cross-validation process, accounting 86.68 % number points. first leading mode shows coherent variations most second north–south dipole eastern characterized by same sign northern (except Xinjiang province). It likely controlled El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability. third sandwich triple central last two are reproduced six coupled climate models' simulations performed framework Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase III (PMIP3). In particular, link with ENSO confirmed models. However, there mismatch between models time development different modes. suggests important role internal reconstructed 500 years.
