ABSTRACT
To ensure consistent time series of climate observations, the German Meteorological Service (DWD) operates out parallel measurements (e.g. wind and precipitation measurements) at reference stations. Parallel subsequent generations operational measurement systems are carried over several years selected ten locations with different environmental conditions in order to evaluate quality data obtained, analyse systematic differences between instrument types homogeneity series.A key feature observations is that they monitored consistently long periods a high degree comparability observations. Inconsistent limited use research. In assess consistency these must be described detail using metadata and, particular, by reliably specifying uncertainties. The overall objective measurements, especially before after sensor changes, develop necessary automated procedures detect breaks caused changes homogenise series. This will remain time.Precipitation affected factors can lead underestimations. One evaporation. error significant, for automatic gauges equipped heating system. However, potentially largest triggered wind. shape funnel influences field around gauge small turbulence occur which blow snow raindrops particular gauge, leading an underestimation precipitation.  minimise this error, primary gauging stations shield, while secondary not. These vary from inhomogeneities measurements.  quantify other influences, Weather has established natural conditions.
