Is Colonoscopy Necessary after Computed Tomography Diagnosis of Acute Diverticulitis?

ABSTRACT
A diagnosis of acute diverticulitis is based on computed tomography (CT). Colonoscopy commonly performed after the event to exclude other diagnoses. This study aimed determine whether colonoscopy necessary and what additional information gained from a diverticulitis. Acute was diagnosed by clinical criteria characteristic CT findings. We analyzed number patients in whom colorectal cancers were incidental findings polyps diseases. total 177 retrospectively. The mean age 43.3±15.3 years (range, 13-82 years) 97 (54.8%) male. Sixty-one had undergone within 1 year attack. Advanced adenomatous lesions colonic malignancy not detected. Nineteen (31.1%) ≥1 polyp 11 (18.0%) an polyp. No new or different made colonoscopy. None 116 who did undergo cancer registered with Korea Central Cancer Registry. Routine yields little benefit typical symptoms CT. current practice needs be reevaluated.
