ABSTRACT
Functional neurological disorders (FND) represent a group of pathologies in which the functioning nervous system is impaired. Recent advancements research have led to better understanding involved pathophysiological processes and development new strategies for early diagnosis. In particular, functional movement (FMD) benefited from updates diagnostic criteria management strategies. Aim Study: The aim this was conduct detailed review literature order analyze clinical approach FMD. Materials Methods: synthesis, carried out accordance with PRISMA guidelines by two authors (OG, MC), included 47 articles published between 01/2020 06/2024 English PubMed-Medline ResearchGate, supplemented 7 relevant citations/bibliographies. Results: FMD are pathophysiologically explained through duality: defects neurocircuitry involving selfagency, salience, emotion processing systems, psychosocial influences (predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating factors). This paradigm shift has contributed tactics based on “rulein” criteria, supported pillars such as incongruence, inconsistency, variability, distractibility. It also improved communication patients ensure compliance. Additionally, holistic physical rehabilitation, psychotherapy, pharmacological treatment when necessary, initiated possible, key ensuring effective quality life. Conclusions: significant challenge neurology, but recent advances mechanisms adoption “rule-in” more treatments outcomes. crucial neurologists adopt these approaches improve patient care transform medical practice.
