ABSTRACT
<strong>Background:</strong> The prevalence of essential tremor (ET) is still not well understood and the various studies performed to date have generated highly variable results. Few epidemiologic on ET been reported from Spain. <strong>Methods:</strong> A one-stage door-to-door survey was conducted Arosa Island, northwestern Spain, determine in population aged 65 years older. diagnostic criteria for were presence non-dystonic head or moderate- severe-amplitude at least four tests revised Washington Heights-Inwood Genetic Study Essential Tremor (WHIGET) Scale. <strong>Results:</strong> total individuals with (28 males, 37 females) identified, resulting a crude 8.63% (adjusted rate 8.42%). Prevalence increased advancing age. There no significant differences between sexes any age groups. Among prevalent cases, 12.3% (n=8) had previously diagnosed. Only 29.2% (n=19) functional disability caused by tremor. family history 35.4% (n=23). <strong>Discussion:</strong> higher than that seen similar populations Spain other countries. high proportion those undiagnosed. Since Island has relatively isolated area, these results might indicate predominant role, elderly, genetic factors development ET.
