All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) crashes in an unregulated environment: A prospective study of 56 cases

ABSTRACT
All terrain vehicle (ATV) use is increasing at a rapid pace in settings without proper safety regulations. Aim: To define injury patterns, impairments, and outcomes among patients injured ATV crashes; to determine prevalence of protective equipment use; the potential role prevention addressing problem. Methods: During recent 10 month period, 56 were reported as crashes seriously enough require admission prospectively entered into study-specific database. Patient demographics, site crash, prior experience, recorded. Injuries characterized by body system tabulated. Outcomes, including deaths defined. Results: There 47 males (84%) 9 females (16%). Most injuries occurred older than 18 years, but 20% children less 14 years age. Helmet was confirmed 12%. Three died (5% mortality). Significant disability 19 (34%) permanent 4 (7%). Head, face musculoskeletal most common. Conclusions: can cause serious death disability. The lack awareness for this popular recreational activity has escalated risk injury, absence programs regulations further aggravated Based on these data, public education program, compulsory helmets other clothing, penalties non-compliance should be implemented. Interventions recreation sites point sale may beneficial.
