Undergraduate nurses attitudes towards organ donation: a cross-sectional survey in a north Italian university.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Although research reveals that there are many complex factors influencing the low organ donation rate in addition to nurses, literature suggests nurses and doctors' active engagement support have a significant impact on rates. Donation rates can be influenced by variety of factors, including health professionals' attitudes, knowledge, confidence, participation, training. OBJECTIVES: To investigate attitudes undergraduate nursing students at University Brescia Campus Cremona regarding tissue donation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted administering Organ Attitudes Scale (ODAS). RESULTS: ODAS showed most know someone who has donated an during their lifetime or after death, over half received transplant. However, 63.3% indicated they had not specific training, ranged from 45 71 with median score 61. Bivariate correlation analysis revealed academic training does correlate students' (p=.37). Knowing transplant correlates having expressed willingness donate (p=.047), perceived knowledge about process (p=.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The study found mainly positive toward among campus. Further involving universities is needed raise awareness public healthcare workers.
