Determinants of sputum conversion at two months of treatment under National Tuberculosis Programme, South India

ABSTRACT
Background: In India, Revised National Tuberculosis (TB) control programme (RNTCP) offers free diagnosis and treatment for TB, based on the Directly Observed Treatment Short (DOTS) course strategy. Under RNTCP, sputum conversion rate (SCR), at end of 2 months is an important operational indicator, which ideally expected to be 90%. Objectives: The objective present work was investigate factors associated with low SCR in Sira TB unit, Tumkur District, India. Material Methods: It a retrospective cohort study all new smear-positive patients registered RNTCP 2011. Data were retrieved from register maintained District center. Chi-square Student’s t-test used analysis variables between who positive negative treatment. Multivariate logistic regression applied determine risk contributed by towards non-conversion sputum. Results: Of 268 included patients, 66.7% negative. Patients aged ≥ 45 years twice prone (OR = 2.14) (P 0.007). odds being after observed significantly high 7.12; 95% C.I. 1.52–33.22; P 0.01) grade 3+ time diagnosis, respectively. Conclusion: Elderly bacilli load should advised counselled well regarding adherence Further, advice given preventing spread disease practising cough hygiene, as they are more infectious than other less sputum-positive grade.
