Pharmacoepidemiology of Gentamicin Prescription in Dogs by some Practicing Veterinarians in Nigeria

ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to evaluate the prescribing trend gentamicin in dogs by veterinarians Nigeria. A retrospective and cross-sectional survey done six geopolitical zones About 150 questionnaires were administered practicing licensed within areas addressing issues such as pattern, indications, dosage regimen, therapeutic monitoring, efficacy adverse effects dogs. Data obtained checked for its completeness analyzed using Microsoft office Excel 2007. Gentamicin had highest prescription rate (32%), closely followed streptomycin (31%) neomycin (22%). greater percentage (59 %) respondents affirmed that they don’t often prescribe gentamicin. However, it is mostly prescribed with signs gastroenteritis at a common dose 4-5 mg/kg intramuscularly, where 94 % attested effectiveness. But 52 not sure administer Very few monitored their patients after treatment hence small number effects, predominantly nephrotoxicity observed respondents. Prescription pattern patient monitoring generally poor suggesting inadequate knowledge application pharmacology consequently need proper education subject.
