ABSTRACT
Background: Experimentation with smoking occurs primarily during adolescence. Preventing initiation among adolescents has become a significant global public health concern in tobacco control. Objective: To evaluate whether there are differences habit within gender, young adults applying for registration to Physical Training and Sports (PTS) High School Sakarya University, Turkey. Method: Young PTS were asked demographic information about their habits status of family members three consequent years (2006, 2007, 2008). Gender assessed by chi-square one-way anova year, using SPSS Windows 16.0 Results: Of total 2552 individuals responded, 77.6% (n=1980) boys 22.4% (n=572) girls; mean age was 19.7±1.9 (16-27).Smoking prevelances differed significantly between girls 2006 but not 2008 (respectively p=0.004, p=0.001, p=0.08). The prevelance seen 32.3% it 19.6% 2008.The 20.1% 12.8% 2008. decreasing trend the current smokers daily as much boys.The prevalence gender only 2006; difference seemed dissapeared 2007 (respectively; p=0.01, p=0.1; p=0.9) There no (p=0.5).Boys’ related brother/sisters (p=0.001). Whereas both parents (p=0.006 p=0.01) brothers/sisters (p≤0.0001). Conclusion: This study provides additional supporting idea that control policies maintained 21st century should take into account smoking.
