ABSTRACT
We examined the in vitro digestibility of maltobionic acid, obtained from enzymatic oxidation maltose, its utilization by intestinal bacteria, and biological effects on bowel movements healthy subjects. found that acid is not digested saliva, gastric juice, or pancreatic juice. Moreover, it only to a small extent enzymes. Among 24 strains was selectively utilized Bifidobacterium dentium Bi. adolescentis. also evaluated influence long-term ingestion calcium salt Japanese women randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial. Thirty-four subjects completed study, no adverse events related test food were observed. Ten excluded prior efficacy analysis because conflict with control criteria; remaining analyzed. Intake containing 4 g for weeks caused significant increase stool frequency, improvement form scale CAS-MT total scores as compared placebo group. These results suggest an indigestible carbohydrate promising therapeutic agent improving environment.
