ABSTRACT
Background: Many species of the genus Centaurea have been reported to be used in Anatolian folk medicine. In present study, methanolic and aqueous extracts three L. (C. calcitrapa subsp. calcitrapa, C. ptosimopappa spicata) assessed for antioxidant cytotoxic activities. Materials Methods: Antioxidant activity was investigated by DPPH superoxide anion scavenging anti-lipid peroxidation assays. Cytotoxic effect on HeLa Vero cells were MTT assay. Results: Superoxide activities higher than those extracts, highest detected with IC50 value 25.91 μg/mL. The extract showed strongest activity. Total phenolic contents (mg gallic acid equivalent per gram) ranged between 17.25 120.50 ptosimopappa. observed both cell lines values <100 Conclusions: According results tests, selected species, especially can regarded as a potential source natural antioxidants prevention treatment diseases which oxidants or free radicals are implicated.
