ABSTRACT
Acicular ferrite is a microstructure nucleating intergranularly on non-metallic inclusions and forming an arrangement of fine, interlocking grains. This structure known to improve steel properties, especially toughness, essentially. The formation acicular mainly affected by composition, cooling rate, inclusion landscape austenite grain size. In recent decades, extensive research has been conducted investigate these factors. present paper provides overview the impact published results state knowledge regarding formation. Special attention paid effect carbon, manganese titanium addition steel, as well optimum size, number composition inclusions. addition, reactions during nucleation growth needles are briefly addressed. Further, characteristics bainite summarized, which should help distinguish similar structures.
