Western equine encephalitis: a pediatric case report

ABSTRACT
Western equine encephalitis (WEE) is a zoonotic disease caused by an RNA virus of the genus Alphavirus, and humans are accidental hosts. Although most patients do not develop symptoms upon infection, children at higher risk for neurological involvement. Here we describe case previously healthy 13-year-old male patient who lived in urban area province Buenos Aires, Argentina, was hospitalized diagnosed with meningoencephalitis. Due to torpid course his condition because none frequent microorganisms were isolated, test IgG antibodies WEE blood cerebrospinal fluid requested; both samples positive. often underdiagnosed cause should be taken into consideration rural areas.
