Waterpipe tobacco use among Iranian university students: correlates and perceived reasons for use

ABSTRACT
Waterpipe smoking is becoming a global health crisis among youth.To identify the prevalence of waterpipe use Iranian university students and to explore perceived reasons for use.A random sample 1024 at two major universities in South Iran was enrolled study. A three-part questionnaire (baseline data, tobacco status use) used. Students filled out self-administered their classrooms.The respondents' lifetime last 30 days 42.5% 18.7%, respectively. The mean age initiation 16.3 ± 3.2 years. Ever positively associated with male sex, whereas no association found regarding marital status. highest odds were observed close friends who smoked (5.94, 95%CI 4.26-8.30). most important reason as stated by enjoyment (55.8%).Given alarming smoking, preventive measures should be adopted taking into account influence peers, siblings parents lessening social tolerance smoking.
