Transitioning to College: Experiences of Successful First-Generation College Students

ABSTRACT
This qualitative study explored the high school to college transition experiences of ten successful first-generation students (FGCS). Participants were seniors at an historically black university in United States. A generic research design was used, including in-depth, semi-structured interviews collect and analyze data. reported that experience led confusion with academic financial procedures, various emotions anxiety fear, realization they had deficits skills, receipt support from family members others. Cultural social capital appeared play key roles their success. Student affairs professionals are encouraged explore targeted, individualized strategies meet needs FGCS as college.
