Insomnia in Patients with COPD

ABSTRACT
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality may frequently be associated with sleep disturbances. However, the correlates insomnia in COPD patients have not been well characterized. The aim current study was to describe prevalence disorder elucidate demographic clinical characteristics that are insomnia.Cross-sectional study.Clinic-based sample from an academic hospital.Patients stable COPD.An interviewer-conducted survey administered 183 participants COPD. Seventy-two these (30 42 without insomnia) maintained diary underwent actigraphy for 7 days.Insomnia (chronic disturbance impaired daytime functioning) present 27.3% participants. Current tobacco users (odds ratio (OR), 2.13) those frequent sadness/anxiety (OR, 3.57) had higher odds, but oxygen use lower odds 0.35) insomnia. Patients worse quality life sleepiness. Actigraphy revealed shorter duration efficiency, self-reported insomnia.Insomnia highly prevalent COPD; prevalence, insomnia; poorer increased sleepiness; objective quality.
