Specialist Physicians in Geriatrics— Report of the Canadian Geriatrics Society Physician Resource Work Group

ABSTRACT
BackgroundAt the 2011 Annual Business Meeting of Canadian Geriatrics Society (CGS), an ad hoc Work Group was struck to submit a report providing estimate number physicians and full-time equivalents (FTEs) currently working in field geriatrics, required (if possible), clearer understanding what has be done move physician resource planning geriatrics forward Canada.MethodsIt decided focus on specialist (defined as those who have completed advanced clinical training or equivalent work experience limit significant portion their work-related activities duties consultant).ResultsIn 2012, there are 230–242 certified specialists geriatric medicine approximately 326.15 FTE functional geriatrics. While this is less than required, no precise present future need could provided, attempts at national plan based utilization demand forecasting, needs-based planning, and/or benchmarking taken place.ConclusionsThis would opportune time for CGS become more involved planning. In addition being critical health our practice, increasing interest aligning specialty with societal needs (n = 216).
