ABSTRACT
Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe neurological disease leading to poor quality of life. Objectives: The regenerative effect adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) encapsulated into fibrin, and collagen hydrogel scaffolds on rat model SCI was investigated using clinical histopathological examinations. Methods: A total 18 adult male Wistar rats (250 - 300 g) were prepared randomly divided three equal groups, each with six rats, including the control or group (SCI contusion without treatment), treated AD-MSCs in fibrin hydrogel, groups. Clinically, functional recovery hindlimb locomotor activity assessed Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan's (BBB) scoring system four weeks post-treatment. sacrificed at week post-treatment, their spinal cords examined histopathologically. Results: Faster indicated seen both treatment groups compared group. Severe polio leuko-myelomalacia associated disruption structure identified Mild mild moderate + Conclusions: hydrogels, as two most promising ECM-based natural have potential be developed neural tissue engineering (NTE), such for SCI.
