ABSTRACT
Background: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) has been proposed reduce risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), but association on MetS in non-Mediterranean populations remains unclear. Objectives: The aim this study was investigate whether adherence MedDiet is related incident and its components during a 3-year follow-up among Iranian adults. Patients Methods: Longitudinal associations between were investigated 2241 adults, aged 18 - 74 years, without type 2 diabetes selected from participants Tehran lipid glucose (TLGS). incidence also examined 1661 participants, free Mets at baseline. assessed using traditional score (MDS) recently posteriori adaptation MDS Sofi et al. (Sofi-MDS). defined according recent interim consensus. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, neither higher nor Sofi-MDS significantly associated with mean values abnormalities after 3 years follow-up. During follow-up, 246 developed identified. In multivariable model, adjusted odds ratio (OR) developing did not differ highest tertile (OR (95% CI): 0.88 (0.62 1.23)) or sofi-MDS CI):1.12 (0.77 1.62)) compared those lowest tertiles. Conclusions: MedDiet, Sofi-MDS, may predict adult populations.
