Acupuncture Effect on Pruritus in Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial

ABSTRACT
Background: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a worldwide growing public health concern. Hemodialysis (HD) treatment option for people experiencing ESRD. Because of limited therapeutic methods due to the vague pathogenesis, control pruritus so difficult. Thus, we decided carry out this study examine effect acupuncture on pruritus. Methods: This multi-centered randomized clinical trial was conducted during 2015 - 2017 in hemodialysis wards teaching hospitals Mashhad, Iran. 30 patients that met inclusion criteria entered by convenience sampling and were into two groups: One group receiving intervention other sham as group. We measured visual analog scale (VAS) score before after groups. Results: The mean age participants 49.04 ± 14.93 with minimum 23 years maximum 65 years. 17 (65.40%) male, nine (34.60%) female. had significant difference between scores both groups intervention, but more than (5.94 versus 1.27, respectively). Our also showed (P value < 0.001). Conclusions: findings indicate acupuncture, noninvasive, safe, easy treatment, can be useful effective management Identifying pathophysiology neurobiological mechanism reduce will remarkably improve application new therapies decrease itching.
