Diet Quality and Depression in a Cohort of American Indians: The Strong Heart Family Study

ABSTRACT
Diet quality has been shown to be inversely associated with depression, but this not studied in American Indians (AIs). We examined the prospective association of diet and probable depression a family-based cohort rural AIs. Using data from Strong Heart Family Study, we included 1,100 AIs ≥14 years old who were free at baseline. defined as presence moderate or severe depressive symptoms on Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale current use antidepressant medications. calculated baseline food frequency questionnaires using Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI). used GEE-based multivariate logistic regression estimate odds ratio follow up 10-point higher AHEI score baseline, adjusted demographic, psychosocial, health factors.
