ABSTRACT
Context.— Mesothelioma is an uncommon tumor that can be difficult to diagnose. Objective.— To provide updated, practical guidelines for the pathologic diagnosis of mesothelioma. Data Sources.— Pathologists involved in International Interest Group and others with expertise mesothelioma contributed this update. Reference material includes peer-reviewed publications textbooks. Conclusions.— There was consensus opinion regarding (1) histomorphologic mesothelial tumors, including distinction epithelioid, biphasic, sarcomatoid mesothelioma; recognition morphologic variants patterns; common pitfalls; (2) molecular pathogenesis (3) application immunohistochemical markers establish lineage distinguish from differentials; (4) ancillary studies benign malignant proliferations, BAP1 MTAP immunostains; novel immunomarkers such as Merlin p53; fluorescence situ hybridization (FISH) homozygous deletion CDKN2A; assays; (5) recommendations routine reporting mesothelioma, grading epithelioid other prognostic parameters; (6) situ; (7) cytologic use immunostains (8) features nonmalignant peritoneal lesions.
