ABSTRACT
The Cleomaceae family, revised by Iltis and Cochrane, includes several genera, among them Tarenaya, whose pharmacological potential has been widely studied. This article reviews the medicinal properties of species Tarenaya longicarpa (synonyms Cleome spinosa spinosa), popularly known as mussambe , highlighting its uses in traditional scientific medicine. In folk medicine, T. is used to treat asthma, cough, bronchitis, fever, inflammations. Studies confirm that extracts possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anthelmintic activities, well larvicidal insecticidal properties. plant contains secondary metabolites such flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenes, which act against pathogenic microorganisms have therapeutic relevance. methodology involved a bibliographic review databases, using specific descriptors related potential. analysis articles revealed essential oil from leaves significantly inhibits bacteria like Streptococcus pyogenes. However, efficacy varies depending on solvent used. Although literature demonstrates multiple relevance phytotherapeutic agent, authors emphasize need for further ethnobotanical research deepen understanding promote safe effective use.
