ABSTRACT
The marine ecosystems of Todos os Santos Bay (TSB, State Bahia, Brazil) have been impacted by the presence on its coast a large metropolitan area as well chemical and petrochemical activities.Despite ecological importance, there is lack scientific information concerning metal contamination in TSB biota. Thus, we analyzed concentrations metals four species benthic organisms (two seaweeds, Padina gymnospora Sargassum sp.one seagrass, Halodule wrightii one oyster, Crassostrea rhizophorae) three sites from region that most affected industrial activities. The Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb Zn were determined Atomic Absorption Spectrophometry. The obtained data indicates cadmium copper oysters Ni oysters, range contaminated coastal areas.Cadmium are available to through suspended particles, dissolved fraction water column bottom sediment interstitial water. As other mollusks used food sources local population, levels found may constitute health risk for this population. Our results suggest implanting heavy biomonitoring program ecosystems.
