ABSTRACT
Gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) are invaluable clinical tools that play a role in palliation and nutrition patients with cancer. This study aimed to better understand the risks benefits associated placement maintenance of G-tubes.Patients who underwent G-tube for cancer from January 2013 through December 2017 at tertiary care center were considered inclusion. Clinical data retrospectively collected medical records.A total 242 cancer, whose average age diagnosis was 61 years (range, 21-94 years), (76.4%), decompression (22.7%), or both (0.8%). Successful insertion achieved 96.8%, but 8 required >1 attempted method insertion. In group, minor postplacement complications less common (23.6% vs 53.5%; P<.001) survival shorter (P<.001) compared group. For those decompressive G-tubes, 45.5% had palliative consult; 56.4% seen by social workers; 46.3% went hospice. The frequency hospice discharge higher consults (53.7% 23.1%; P=.01).Half received G-tubes presented stage IV disease died within 1 month placement. Those consult more likely be discharged Patients saw no change functionality, complication rate, survival, regardless adjunct chemotherapy status. These findings illustrate need tool allow multidisciplinary approach interventional decision-making
