Functional and Aesthetic Outcomes in Lower Eyelid Reconstruction

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Lower eyelid reconstruction is a complex surgical procedure requiring a multidisciplinary approach to restore both function and aesthetics. The interaction of otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, and plastic surgeons plays a pivotal role in addressing defects caused by trauma, tumors, or congenital conditions. Advances in surgical techniques, imaging modalities, and tissue engineering have significantly enhanced preoperative planning and surgical outcomes, providing tailored solutions for various types of eyelid defects.
OBJETIVE To evaluate the role of multidisciplinary collaboration in achieving optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes in lower eyelid reconstruction.
METHODS This is a narrative review which included studies in the MEDLINE – PubMed (National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health), COCHRANE, EMBASE and Google Scholar databases, using as descriptors: “Lower Eyelid Reconstruction” AND “Multidisciplinary Surgical Approach” OR “Oculoplastic Surgery” OR “Aesthetic and Functional Restoration” OR “Advances in Reconstructive Techniques” in the last 5 years.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results highlight the efficacy of local flaps, free tissue transfer, and innovative reconstructive methods in achieving functional restoration and aesthetic harmony. Complications such as ectropion, flap necrosis, and scar contracture were infrequent and often successfully managed with timely interventions. Multidisciplinary collaboration and patient-specific approaches proved essential in optimizing both short-term and long-term outcomes, as well as improving patients' psychological and social well-being post-reconstruction.
CONCLUSION In conclusion, lower eyelid reconstruction exemplifies the importance of a holistic, patient-centered approach in managing complex facial defects. Future innovations in regenerative medicine and minimally invasive techniques hold promise for further advancing the field. Meticulous planning, interdisciplinary teamwork, and continuous monitoring remain the cornerstones of successful reconstruction and patient satisfaction.
