Socio-emotional challenges and development of children left behind by migrant mothers

ABSTRACT
With great economic development and rapid urbanization in China, left-behind children whose parents migrate to big cities for job has become a large special population which requires more attention. The present study aims explore the specific influence of migrant mothers on early child development, especially social-emotional problems.The data this was obtained from cross-sectional 8 counties central western rural China. Development status 1880 aged <60 months were assessed by Ages & Stages Questionnaire-Chinese Edition (ASQ) Questionnaire: Social Emotional-Chinese (ASQ: SE). Multivariate logistic regressions used analyze association between being left behand developmental problems various domains, while adjusting socio-demographic, socio-economic perinatal co-variates, effect modification analysis conducted age, gender birth order.Children behind likely have overall suspected delay (odds ratio (OR) = 1.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-1.35), personal social domain (OR 1.55, CI 1.17-2.04) socio-emotional compared with those living their own 1.49, 1.11-2.00) after potential confounders. Additionally, girls increased odds among migrating mother (P interaction 0.037).The concluded that peers mothers, emotional development. Future intervention is needed should pay attention girls.
