ABSTRACT
Background: We sought to determine the frequency of toenail onychomycosis in diabetic patients, identify causative agents, and evaluate epidemiologic risk factors. Methods: Data regarding patients’ characteristics were recorded by attending internal medicine clinician. Clinical examinations toenails performed a dermatologist, specimens collected from nails establish onycomycotic abnormality. All analyzed direct microscopy culture. Results: Of 321 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, clinical was diagnosed 162; 41 those diagnoses confirmed mycologically. isolated fungi, 23 yeasts 18 dermatophytes. Significant correlations found between retinopathy, neuropathy, obesity, family history, duration diabetes. However, no correlation sex, age, educational level, occupation, area residence, levels hemoglobin A1c fasting blood glucose, nephropathy. The most frequently agents yeasts.
