ABSTRACT
Despite its wide distribution worldwide, only 4.6% of temperate grasslands are included within systems protected areas. In Argentina, this situation is even more alarming: 1.05% protected. The study area (central the southern Salado River basin) has a large extent Paspalum quadrifarium (Pq) which been target since middle last century variety agricultural management practices including fire burning for cattle grazing.Five binary images presence-absence data Pq from 42-year range (1974-2016) derived land cover change were used as base data. Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis (MSPA), Change Detection (MCD) and Network Connectivity (NCA) performed to using Guidos Toolbox (GTB) estimation habitat connectivity dynamics patches (fragments).A loss coverage nuclei grassland was observed during period, with some temporal oscillation but no recovery initial states. Additional drastic reduction in also evident resulting maps. number fragments (>50 ha) decreased at beginning period. Also, fragmentation measured components (patches) higher end pajonal had their minimum representativeness 2000, recovered slightly 2011, significant percentage increase smaller (=islets) linear elements bridges branches. Large corridors (mainly edge roads) could be while total landscape pattern drops continuously. Statistics links shows mean values decreasing 1974 2016. On other hand, maximum up 19% 54% original value 2016.Pq have an impact on ecosystem functioning mobility species native fauna. connecting maintained and/or 2011 This fact, although favoring dispersion present diversity cause degradation by effect. Part potential taken research example livestock management, it one that would most preserve biodiversity environment. methodological side, use proved tool GTB useful monitoring grassland-habitat fragmentation.
