Evaluation and follow‐up of fetal hydronephrosis.

ABSTRACT
To determine the antenatal course and neonatal follow‐up of isolated fetal hydronephrosis. We reviewed our ultrasonography database from January 1989 to June 1999 for all cases unilateral or bilateral hydronephrosis that had at least 1 ultrasonographic examination. Cases were defined as mild, moderate, severe depending on renal pelvis anteroposterior diameter gestational age. Data analyzed using chi2 test with Fisher exact where appropriate. Medical records reviewed, telephone interviews performed which infants received after birth. Of 57,966 examinations in 20,049 women during study period, 393 patients met criteria evaluation. these, 347 (88%) fetuses mild Most these complete resolution pregnancy. Forty classified having moderate hydronephrosis, 6 those 15% resolved, 25% improved, 48% remained unchanged, 12% worsened There no utero group; however, 4 improved 2 unchanged. identified prenatally, 25 consultation by a pediatric urologist newborn 7 required surgical intervention. Our population‐based data suggest most will resolve before delivery.
