To study the reproductive biology of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) in Furnas Reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a total 1307 specimens were captured bimonthly sampling from August 1993 to July 1994. The sex ratio showed predominance females, representing 65.2% sample. stages gonadal maturation and spawning type determined through macro- microscopic analysis gonads as well by variation gonadosomatic indices. A. fractionated reproduction throughout year, with peaks influenced water...
The identification of fish larvae from two neotropical hydrographic basins using traditional morphological taxonomy and DNA barcoding revealed no conflicting results between the barcode larvae. A lower rate (25%) correct eggs as belonging to migratory or non‐migratory species was achieved. Accurate ichthyoplankton by is an important tool for reproductive behaviour studies, estimation biodiversity detecting rare species, well defining environmental management strategies conservation in neotropics.
Large reservoirs are an increasingly common feature across tropical landscapes because of their importance for water supply, flood control and hydropower, but ecological conditions infrequently evaluated. Our objective was to assess the range disturbances two large influences on benthic macroinvertebrates. We tested three hypotheses: i) a wide variation in level environmental disturbance can be observed among sites reservoirs; ii) would exhibit different degree level; iii) magnitude...
We used complex hypervariable repeats to evaluate the genetic diversity and structure of Prochilodus costatus (Characiformes), an ecologically economically important species endemic São Francisco River basin.Hydroelectric dams along river have led population fragmentation, which can limit gene flow.Restocking from hatcheries has been repopulate declining populations. To determine how fragmentation hatchery supplementation affect P. structure, we studied populations three sites up downstream...
Abstract We assessed the fish assemblage structure and composition of Nova Ponte Reservoir (Araguari River, Upper Paraná Basin, Brazil). observed significant differences in abundance (p = 0.0003), richness 0.0005) diversity 0.02) between lacustrine riverine zones reservoir. Nine species were significantly more abundant region: Astyanax altiparanae, gr. fasciatus, Galeocharax knerii, Hoplias intermedius, Hypostomus sp., Leporinus friderici, obtusidens, Pimelodus maculatus Schizodon nasutus....
The study of ichthyoplankton is paramount to understanding fish assemblages' reproductive dynamics. DNA metabarcoding has been applied as a rapid, cost-effective, and accurate taxonomy tool, allowing the identification multiple individuals simultaneously. However, there remain significant challenges when using metabarcoding, such molecular marker choice according taxonomic resolution length fragment be sequenced, primer bias, incomplete reference databases, qualitative inference...
The reproductive biology of the piau-jejo Leporinus taeniatus Lütken, 1875, an endemic species from São Francisco River basin, was studied by using macroscopical and histological techniques. A total 121 males 94 females were captured quarterly, between March 2002 February 2003 in Juramento Reservoir. Females larger than males, indicating sexual dimorphism. Stages gonadal maturation defined analyses gonadosomatic index. Peaks maturing/mature spawned/spermiated fishes has occurred period...
Abstract Flow‐dependent fish specialists require specific conditions for reproduction, so the success and reproductive intensity of these animals are determined by flood regime. Thus, this study investigated spatial temporal patterns fish, especially migratory Prochilodu s species (flow‐dependent specialists) in an unusual period low flow Pará River sub‐basin, one main tributaries upper São Francisco River. For this, ichthyoplankton collections were carried out between November 2013 February...
Abstract Martins, Y.S., Moura, D.F., Santos, G.B., Rizzo, E. and Bazzoli, N. 2009. Comparative folliculogenesis spermatogenesis of four teleost fish from a Reservoir in south‐eastern Brazil. — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm). 91 : 466–473. This study provides comparative analysis gametogenesis neotropical teleosts Metynnis maculatus , Megalancistrus parananus Cichla kelberi Satanoperca pappaterra through histological, histochemical histometric techniques. In the ooplasm C. S. conspicuous lipid...
The gonadal structure and gametogenesis of Loricaria lentiginosa Isbrücker, 1979 were studied through anatomical histological techniques. Forty two males ten females in maturation/mature stage captured the reservoir Porto Colombia, Paraná river basin, Minas Gerais, using gill nets, from November 2001 to October 2002 (tri-monthly captures). Examination testes revealed that they paired, elongated not fringed organs. Histologically, presented three distinct regions: cranial espermatogenic;...
Reservoirs can have both positive and negative effects on differing fish species depending the concerned reservoir morphology, flow regime, basin location. We assessed influence of limnological zones ichthyofauna three large Neotropical reservoirs in two different river basins. sampled through use gill nets set at 40 systematically selected sites each reservoir. used satellite images, algae, suspended solids concentrations to classify those as lacustrine or riverine. observed significant...
The study of ichthyoplankton composition, abundance and distribution is paramount to understand the reproductive dynamics local fish assemblages. analysis these parameters allows identification spawning sites, nursery areas migration routes. However, due lack characters in early life stages, morphological often impractical many studies identify only larvae. Additionally, its accuracy shows great variation between taxonomists laboratories according their experience specialty. DNA barcoding...
