The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce increase emotions, we tested the effectiveness reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy which modifies how one thinks about situation. Participants from 87 countries/regions (N = 21,644) were randomly assigned to two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) control conditions (active...
Healthcare workers (HCWs) are an important priority group for vaccination against influenza, yet, flu vaccine uptake remains low among them. Psychosocial studies of HCWs' decisions to get vaccinated have commonly drawn on subjective expected utility models assess predictors vaccination, assuming choices result from a rational information-weighing process. By contrast, we recast those as commitment and aimed understand why HCWs may want (rather than believe they need to) the flu. This article...

Rates of flu vaccination among healthcare professionals often remain lower than recommended guidelines. We tested whether autonomy-supportive communication styles could improve the effectiveness statements seeking to promote professionals' uptake.A pilot study established that presented in an style (i.e., upholding freedom choice) posed a significantly threat compared equivalent controlling thwarting choice by implying obligation). The main experiment examined impact these two on behavioral...
We use self-determination theory to extend the conceptual understanding of flu vaccine hesitancy among health professionals. The scale sheds light on role played by motivational factors above and beyond traditional cognitive such as biased risk judgements beliefs.Across five phases using data from 718 healthcare professionals we establish factor structure, reliability, discriminant, convergent, criterion-related, incremental validity, measurement invariance Treatment Self-Regulation...
Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-country, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of messages promoted personal agency reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive shaming (i.e. controlling compared no message at all. Results partially...
