Abstract Low-risk removal of embedded surface soiling on delicate heritage objects can require novel alternatives to traditional cleaning systems. Edvard Munch’s monumental Aula paintings (1911–16) have a long history exposure atmospheric pollution and campaigns that compromised the appearance condition these important artworks. Soiling from porous water-sensitive, unvarnished oil continues be major conservation challenge. This paper presents approach results research into effect efficiency...

Historical recipes have been used as sources of information on artists’ materials and methods since the nineteenth century, first in field art history, more recently also conservation studies history science. The reliability historical remains an important issue. This paper examines relationship between for preparatory layers oil painting artistic practice by investigating authors, their intentions themselves. In this study, we compare the hyperspectral imaging capabilities of a custom-built visible light OCT with those commercial grade camera. Using Short-Time-Fourier-Transform algorithm on signal, estimate variation in surface spectral response from two paint pigments. Our study aims at comparing measurements obtained calibration samples and to an optimal working point for OCT-based processing.

The visual appearance of a painting is the result variations in pigments, layers and layer thicknesses. An important role can be played by ground colour. first preparation support before actual painting. Medieval painters worked on white grounds. Coloured grounds appeared during late 15th century Italy spreading to northern part Europe around 1550.
