Is competition in the mass media market an effective deterrent against capture? Does it prevent political groups from influencing reporting? This paper shows that some cases does not. Building on literature capture, model highlights that, under fairly generic assumptions, high can drive cost of capture to zero, making easier. Moreover, conditions parameters where effect is non-monotonic, i.e. may occur for levels lower, but also higher, than those leading freedom.
