Apex predators perform important functions that regulate ecosystems worldwide. However, little is known about how ecosystem regulation by influenced human activities. In particular, are top-down effects of relative to direct and indirect human-mediated bottom-up processes? Combining data on species' occurrence from camera traps hunting records, we aimed quantify the processes in shaping predator prey distributions a human-dominated landscape Transylvania, Romania. By global standards this...
Abstract The study of the archaeological remains fossil hominins must rely on reconstructions to elucidate behaviour that may have resulted in particular stone tools and their accumulation. Comparatively, tool use among living primates has illuminated behaviours are also amenable examination, permitting direct observations leading artefacts assemblages be incorporated. Here, we describe newly discovered tool-use accumulation sites wild chimpanzees reminiscent human cairns. In addition data...
Abstract Threats to biodiversity and the integrity of ecological systems are escalating globally, both within outside protected areas. Decision makers have inadequate resources manage all threats typically lack information on likely outcomes cost‐effectiveness possible management strategies. Priority Threat Management ( PTM ) is an emerging approach designed address this challenge, by defining appraising cost‐effective strategies for mitigating across regions. The scientific practical...
Abstract Aim Land‐use change is the single biggest cause of biodiversity loss. With a rising demand for resources, understanding how and where agriculture threatens increasing importance. Agricultural expansion has received much attention, but high agricultural land‐use intensity ( LUI ) remains unclear. We address this knowledge gap with two main research questions: (1) Where do global patterns coincide spatial distribution biodiversity? (2) are regions potential conflict between different...
Abstract The absence of a rigorous mechanism for prioritizing investment in endangered species management is major implementation hurdle affecting recovery. Here, we present method strategies based on the likelihood achieving species’ recovery goals per dollar invested. We demonstrate our approach 15 listed under Canada's Species at Risk Act that co‐occur Southwestern Saskatchewan. Without management, only two have >50% probability meeting objectives; whereas, with 13 exceed threshold...
From 1984 to 1986 a prospective study was conducted of 104 general practice patients who started treatment with benzodiazepine or an antidepressant drug. The duration reported use the drugs two months for 45% patients, four 17% and six 15%. Type drug, age, level education were found be predictive continuing use. General practitioners have significant effect on their patients' and, careful selection review when prescribing, may help prevent dependence psychotropic drugs.
Rapidly rising populations and likely increases in incomes sub-Saharan Africa make tens of millions hectares cropland expansion nearly inevitable, even with large crop yields. Much that is to occur higher rainfall savannas, substantial costs biodiversity carbon storage. Zambia presents an acute example this challenge, expected tripling population by 2050, good potential expand maize soya bean production, areas relatively undisturbed miombo woodland associated habitat types high value. Here,...
Abstract Current investment in conservation is insufficient to adequately protect and recover all ecosystems species. The challenge of allocating limited funds acute for Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. Canada, which lack a strategic approach ensure that resources are spent on actions most likely cost‐effectively diminished populations. We applied the Priority Threat Management framework prioritize strategies maximize number thriving populations Central Coast British Columbia, Canada. These...
Abstract Much like humans, chimpanzees occupy diverse habitats and exhibit extensive behavioural variability. However, are recognized as a discontinuous species, with four subspecies separated by historical geographic barriers. Nevertheless, their range-wide degree of genetic connectivity remains poorly resolved, mainly due to sampling limitations. By analyzing geographically comprehensive sample set amplified at microsatellite markers that inform recent population history, we found...
Agricultural expansion is a leading driver of biodiversity loss across the world, but little known on how future land-use change may encroach remaining natural vegetation. This uncertainty is, in part, due to unknown levels agricultural intensification and international trade. Using an economic model, we assessed potential losses vegetation with focus these threaten hotspots intact forest landscapes. We analysed under proactive reactive protection scenarios, for different rates pasture...
Herpesviruses are thought to have evolved in very close association with their hosts. This is notably the case for cytomegaloviruses (CMVs; genus Cytomegalovirus) infecting primates, which exhibit a strong signal of co-divergence Some herpesviruses however known crossed species barriers. Based on limited sampling CMV diversity hominine (African great ape and human) lineage, we hypothesized that chimpanzees gorillas might mutually exchanged CMVs past. Here, performed comprehensive molecular...
Abstract Agricultural large-scale land acquisitions have been linked with enhanced deforestation and use change. Yet the extent to which transnational agricultural (TALSLAs) contribute to—or merely correlate with—deforestation, expected biodiversity impacts of intended changes across ecosystems, remains unclear. We examine 178 georeferenced TALSLA locations in 40 countries address this gap. While forest cover within TALSLAs decreased by 17% between 2000 2018 became more fragmented,...
Species–area relationships (SARs) provide an avenue to model patterns of species richness and have recently been shown vary substantially across regions different climate, vegetation, land cover. Given that a large proportion the globe has converted agriculture, considering variety in agricultural management practices, key question is whether global SARs gradients intensity. We developed for mammals account geographic variation biomes, cover range land‐use intensity indicators representing...
Abstract Throughout history, humans have settled in areas of high biodiversity. Today these are home to our biggest urban centers with biodiversity at increasing risk from escalating cumulative threats. Identifying the management strategies conserve species within such regions, and ensuring effective governance oversee their implementation, presents enormous challenges. Using a novel Priority Threat Management (PTM) approach that calculates cost‐effectiveness conservation action...
Abstract Aim Agriculture is a key threat to biodiversity; however, its relationship with biodiversity patterns understudied. Here, we evaluate how the extent, intensity and history of croplands relate global distribution threatened mammals. We propose two hypotheses explain these relationships: shelter , which predicts that species concentrate in areas low human land use; according should high use. Location Global. Time period c . 6000 BC – AD 2014. Major taxa studied Terrestrial Methods...

The world is changing more quickly now than it ever has before, predominantly due to our large consumption rates and population size. Despite this epoch being well-accepted as the 'Anthropocene', surprising that there still a lack of willingness by many conservation scientists engage with consequences human dynamics on biodiversity. We highlight importance addressing effects abundance, density growth rate note environmental organisations are beginning embrace problem but take-up amongst...
