Air traffic tracking platforms such as the OpenSky Network use crowdsourcing to track air world wide. While allows for unprecedented coverage, it comes with challenges concerning integrity of data. More specifically, by delegating data collection task a mostly unknown group individuals, network becomes vulnerable breaches inexperienced or malicious actors. Users might - intentionally not send faulty fake tracker and in this way threaten information provided network. In paper, we provide...

Abstract Despite the Aircraft Communications, Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) being widely deployed for over twenty years, little scrutiny has been applied to it outside of aviation community. Whilst originally utilized by commercial airlines track their flights provide automated timekeeping on crew, today serves as a multi-purpose air-ground data link many stakeholders including private jet owners, state actors military. Such change caused ACARS be used far beyond its original...

Many wireless communications systems found in aircraft lack standard security mechanisms, leaving them vulnerable to attack. With affordable software-defined radios readily available, a novel threat has emerged which allows wide range of attackers easily interfere with avionic systems.Whilst these vulnerabilities are known, predicting their ultimate effect is difficult.A major factor this how flight crew respond, especially whether extensive training fault handling helps manage attacks.To...

Collision avoidance is one of the most crucial applications with regards to safety global airspace. The introduction mandatory airborne collision systems has significantly reduced likelihood mid-air collisions despite increase in air traffic density. In this paper, we analyze 250 billion aircraft transponder messages received from 126,700 by OpenSky Network over a two-week period. We use data quantify equipage and usage aspects Traffic Alert Avoidance System (TCAS) as it working real world....

Abstract Airborne collision avoidance systems provide an onboard safety net should normal air traffic control procedures fail to keep aircraft separated. These are widely deployed and have been constantly refined over the past three decades, usually in response near misses or mid-air collisions. Recent years seen security research increasingly focus on aviation, identifying that key wireless links—some of which used avoidance—are vulnerable attack. In this paper, we go one step further...

In this paper, a novel architecture for streaming intrusion detection system Grid computing environments is presented. Detection mechanisms based on traditional log-files or single host databases are replaced by database approach. The allows processing of temporal attack data across multiple sites and offers the potential performance benefits in large scale systems, since processed during its natural flow only stored as long necessary analysis. Worldwide, voice-based Air Traffic Control (ATC) communications are gradually being replaced with data link-based equivalents, namely the Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) system. This helps to manage high levels of congestion on ATC---under modern traffic these analog voice channels extremely busy, especially at times peak traffic. CPDLC offers ability conduct most ATC actions in form digital text-based messages. As ATC, has no built-in security mechanisms. Furthermore,...
