ABSTRACT Laboratory determinations of the distribution coefficient strontium in calcite (kSr) have confirmed earlier results Katz et al. (1972). In addition, we observed that at higher concentrations strontium, values kSr were somewhat lowered. Chemical analyses several deep-sea carbonate sediment sections and their associated porewaters (DSDP Sites 288, 289, 315, 317, 357) as well previously published data other workers 116 305) been used to demonstrate these are appropriate for use...
Trace-element mobility during early diagenesis in distal turbidites: late Quaternary of the Madeira Abyssal Plain, N Atlantic
Drilling near the deformation front of northern Barbados Ridge cored an accretionary prism consisting imbricately thrusted Neogene hemipelagic sediments detached from little-deformed Oligocene to Campanian underthrust deposits by a decollement zone composed lower Miocene upper Oligocene, scaly radiolarian claystone. Biostrati-graphically defined age inversions define thrust faults in that correlate between sites and are apparent on seismic reflection sections. Two located 12 17 km west...
The oxygen isotopic compositions of pore fluids from sediments older oceanic crust commonly decrease with depth. Increases in calcium ion concentrations always accompany the 18 O/ 16 O decreases. These changes are attributed principally to alteration basalts or volcanic ash sediments. Oxygen isotope material balance calculations suggest that 5–20% upper kilometer basalt is altered at time subduction crust. This corresponds a flux into 2.3 × 10 15 moles per million years. Evaluation and...
Detailed vertical profiles of salinity, temperature, oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, nitrite, and silicate have been taken on 6 cruises over a 14‐month period in the Santa Barbara basin. In May 1970, during intense upwelling, nitrate content basin water from sill (475 m) to bottom (580 showed significant changes their normal conditions: oxygen increased 0.05–0.10 ml/ liter 0.35–0.43 ml/liter; concentration, which previously decreased markedly below due reduction little reduction; temperature by...

As part of an ongoing effort to explore the use foraminifera as a means assess modern and ancient methane release, we compared ambient pore water chemistry with distribution stable isotopic composition living (rose Bengal stained) in MBARI ROV Ventana tube cores taken from seepage areas (about 1000 m depth) Monterey Bay, California. Benthic foraminiferal differences between sites clearly indicate that methane‐influenced waters affect distributions carbonate isotope geochemistry. Carbon...
