Abstract Aim Macroecological analyses provide valuable insights into factors that influence how parasites are distributed across space and among hosts. Amid large uncertainties arise when generalizing from local regional findings, hierarchical approaches applied to global datasets required determine whether drivers of parasite infection patterns vary scales. We assessed haemosporidian infections a broad diversity avian host clades zoogeographical realms depict hotspots prevalence identify...
Abstract Animal tolerance towards humans can be a key factor facilitating wildlife–human coexistence, yet traits predicting its direction and magnitude across tropical animals are poorly known. Using 10,249 observations for 842 bird species inhabiting open ecosystems in Africa, South America, Australia, we find that avian was lower (i.e., escape distance longer) rural rather than urban populations exposed to human disturbance (measured as footprint index). In addition, larger with clutches...
Abstract: Convergence in the use of resources may occur between distantly related organisms. A major ecological resource which members various taxa be interested is a cavity for nesting. variety social hymenopterans and vertebrates nest within tree cavities tropical ecosystems. We used 241 nest-boxes placed seven Kenyan localities to investigate nesting by distant discuss whether interaction them potential factor shaping cavity-nester communities regions. The were occupied insects (ants,...
Increases in the abundance of woody species have been reported to affect provisioning ecosystem services drylands worldwide. However, it is virtually unknown how multiple biotic and abiotic drivers, such as climate, grazing, fire, interact determine dominance across global drylands. We conducted a standardized field survey 304 plots 25 countries assess climatic features, soil properties, fire dryland rangelands. Precipitation, temperature, grazing were key determinants tree shrub dominance....
Syringophilopsis dicruri sp. nov. (Acari: Syringophilidae) ex Dicrurus adsimilis (Bechstein) (Passeriformes: Dicruridae) from Kenya is described. Five new hosts are recorded for 4 syringophilid species: Chlorocichla flaviventris (Smith) and Andropadus latirostris Strickland (Pycnonotidae) veselovsky Skoracki et al., 2009; Ploceus vitellinus Vieillot (Ploceidae) S. nitens Dabert, 2001; Acrocephalus palustris (Sylviidae) Neoaulonastus bisetatus (Fritsch, 1958) Cyanomitra olivacea...
Two new species of the subfamily Picobiinae (Acari: Prostigmata: Syringophilidae) are described: Picobia ploceus sp. n. from Ploceus ocularis Smith (Passeriformes: Ploceidae) and lamprotornis Lamprotornis superbus (Rüppell) Sturnidae), both Kenya. Additionally, hosts recorded: Turdoides jardineii (Smith) Leiothrichidae) Kenya Tanzania, T. rubiginosa Kenya, leucopygia Zambia Namibia, for dziabaszewskii Glowska, Dragun-Damian et Dabert, 2012; Pycnonotus barbatus (Desfontaines) Pycnonotidae)...
The first comprehensive Kenyan hippoboscid checklist is presented. All reliable and available data of louse flies (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) from Kenya are summarised. First records two species given: Icosta (Icosta) mecorrhina Maa, 1964 Ornithomya marginalis 1964. A fly collected Narina's Trogon Apaloderma narina (Stephens, 1815) published for the time. This list increases species-richness fauna to 22 species.
Grey Crowned Crane Balearica regulorum is described as an icon of Africa’s wetlands and grasslands listed Endangered on the IUCN Red List Threatened species. Conservation efforts are partially hindered by lack information factors influencing breeding productivity, such nest-site selection. Factors selection were investigated at Lake Ol’ Bolossat, a 43.3 km2 wetland located in central Kenya from 30 paired nests. Generalized Linear Mixed-Effects Models used to analyse relationship between...
Abstract Information on breeding habits of grey crowned crane ( Balearica regulorum ) in Kenya is currently lacking. Investigations were therefore carried out between 2017 and 2020 to determine its nesting Lake Ol’ Bolossat basin including nest‐site features, number distribution territorial pairs, clutch size, eggs, duration cycle. While 103 pairs observed the lake marshlands (mean density 5.00 pairs/km 2 ), only 20 found upland wetlands. The densities (pairs/km each lake's sections as...
ABSTRACT Aim Changing biodiversity and environmental conditions may allow multi‐host pathogens to spread among host species affect prevalence. There are several widely acknowledged theories about mechanisms that influence variation in pathogen prevalence, including the controversially debated dilution effect abundance‐occupancy relationship hypotheses. Here, we explore such relationships for unique lineages of three vector‐borne avian blood parasite genera (the malaria Plasmodium related...
Abstract History of zoogeographical views and actual distribution 23 determined species Tabanidae from three subfamilies, five tribes 8 genera (Philoliche Wiedemann, 1828 - 4 species; Chrysops Meigen, 1803 3; Thaumastocera Grünberg, 1906 1; Ancala Enderlein, 1922 Atylotus Osten-Sacken, 1876 Tabanus Linnaeus, 1758 8; Haematopota 4; Hippocentrum Austen, 1908 1) mainly Kenya are summarized, using the names recent African countries. sericiventris Loew, 1858 is new for Kenya. Lower taxonomical...
Quill mites (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Syringophilidae) parasitizing waxbills of genus Estrilda Swainson (Aves: Passeriformes: Estrildidae) from the Sub-Saharan region are studied for first time. Among them, a new species, Syringophiloidus estrildus sp. nov., is described and host species Neosyringophilopsis lonchurus Skoracki, 2008, Neoaulonastus oryzivorus (Skoracki, 2011) comb. Picobia lonchurae Skoracki et al., 2016 recorded. In our study, we examined 120 specimens belonging to seven 16...
Understanding the habitat selection and structure of a species is critical for developing evidence-centered conservation actions. Sharpe’s Longclaw Macronyx sharpei, passerine bird endemic to Kenya, threatened by reductions in size quality that have left it inhabiting small highly fragmented range. From January June 2016 we investigated abundance density Marania farm located Meru county northern sector Mt. where no previous study had been done. Population were determined using flush count...
Grey Crowned Crane Balearica regulorum is described as an icon of Africa’s wetlands and grasslands listed Endangered on the IUCN Red List Threatened species. Efforts towards its conservation actions are nonetheless hindered by among others, lack knowledge factors influencing breeding productivity such nest-site selection. Factors probability selection were investigated at Lake Ol’ Bolossat, a 43.3 km2 wetland located in central Kenya highlands resident. The number distribution pattern pairs...
