Diatoms produce diverse three-dimensional, regular silica structures with nanometer to micrometer dimensions and hold considerable promise for biological or biomimetic fabrication of nanostructured materials devices. The unique hierarchical porous structure diatom frustules is in particular attractive membrane applications microfluidic systems. In this paper, a procedure pore size modifications two centric species, Coscinodiscus sp. Thalassiosira eccentrica (T. eccentrica) using the atomic...
Lanthanum zirconate has been prepared via a new chemical synthesis method by combining sol–gel processing and complex precipitation. The was carried out in aqueous solution under ambient conditions. synthesized powder possessed the pyrochlore superstructure upon calcination above 1200°C. A suite of characterization techniques, including FTIR , Raman, X ‐ray electron diffraction, TEM SEM nitrogen sorption were employed to investigate microstructural evolution bulk properties. Dense ceramics...
To investigate excess-hydrolysis of titanium alkoxides, TiO2 powders were fabricated from titanium-tetra-isopropoxide using 6:1 and 100:1 H2O:Ti (r) ratios. Powders dried fired at a range temperatures ( up to 800 C). Hydroxylation organic content in characterised ATR-FTIR, laser Raman microspectroscopy, elemental microanalysis; surface area pore size distribution evaluated N2 gas adsorption; phase composition was analysed XRD microspectroscopy; crystallite by XRD, TEM SEM. Results showed...
Abstract Dr Eric (Lou) Vance spent 32 years at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), where he was dedicated to development of Synroc technology, a waste treatment solution for intractable nuclear wastes. The original form Synroc, multiphase ceramic wasteform based on stable leach resistant titanate minerals, invented by scientists in late 1970s. This formulation directed toward immobilization PUREX wastes from reprocessing fuels. ANSTO under scientific...
Abstract Brannerite‐based glass‐ceramics have been developed as potential waste forms for the immobilization of actinide‐rich radioactive wastes. For first time, formation brannerite phases in glass has demonstrated using uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu) with additions gadolinium hafnium neutron absorbers. Both XRD SEM ‐ EDS confirm that is dominating phase compositions close to Y 0.5 U Ti 2 O 6 , Gd 0.2 Pu 0.3 0.1 Hf 0.6 internally crystallized glass. TEM SAED Raman spectroscopy reveal...
We report a new generic method of reversibly controlling the photochromism spiropyrans. It was found that photochromic effect spiropyrans can be switched on and off by addition removal carbon dioxide (CO(2)) to spiropyran in alcohol solutions containing an amidine (i.e., DBU) acts as CO(2) sensitizer. Spiropyrans are not presence DBU but when is subsequently added solution. The readily removed inert gas bubbling, thus allowing facile activation deactivation effect. Carbon dioxide, without...
The determination of the orientation and molecular density for several porphyrin dyes adsorbed on planar TiO(2) surfaces using X-ray reflectometry (XRR) is reported. Adsorption nanoscale water layers occurred rapidly upon exposure freshly prepared to ambient conditions; however, this was successfully eliminated, resulting in clearly discernible dye sensitized surfaces. Adsorbed orientations, determined from computations constrained by measured layer thickness, were calculated have a binding...
Pyrochlore‐structured lanthanide stannate ceramic ( Ln 2 Sn O 7 ) has been synthesized via a new complex precipitation method. A suite of characterization techniques, including FTIR , Raman, X‐ray, and electron diffraction as well nitrogen sorption were employed to investigate the structural evolution calcined powder. XRD selected area results confirm presence pyrochlore structure after calcination powder above 1200°C. TEM imaging shows fine crystallites gradually increased in size from...
We have been developing our capability with atomic layer deposition (ALD), to understand the influence of parameters on nature TiO2 and Al2O3 films (high low refractive index respectively), multilayer stacks thereof (nanolaminates). These potential applications as anti-reflection coatings optical filters. This paper will explore evolution structure in a function including temperature substrate surface chemistry. A broad range techniques applied study these films, cross-sectional transmission...
The ability of macrocyclic ligands to facilitate formation dispersions single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was investigated using a combination absorption spectrophotometry and optical microscopy. Vacuum filtration aqueous containing SWNTs various (derivatised porphyrin, phthalocyanine, cyclodextrin calixarene) afforded self-supporting membranes known as buckypapers. Microanalytical data energy dispersive X-ray spectra were obtained for these buckypapers provided evidence retention the...
The preparation of free‐standing carbon nanotube “buckypaper” (BP) membranes consisting either single‐walled nanotubes (SWNTs) or multi‐walled (MWNTs), and the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (cipro), is reported. electrical, mechanical morphological properties these have been characterised are compared to those corresponding buckypaper containing surfactant Triton X‐100 (Trix). Analysis scanning electron microscopic images surfaces SWNT/cipro SWNT/Trix (Trix = X‐100) buckypapers revealed that...
A significant improvement in the photovoltaic performance of porphyrin-sensitized TiO2 solar cells under white light illumination is reported. The most occurs within first hour exposure and irreversible at least studied 3-month period. Heat treatment dark produced only moderate improvement, whereas using a UV long-pass filter (>475 nm) led to an similar that obtained with full simulated AM 1.5 spectrum, suggesting effect linked photoexcitation porphyrin dye molecules. Light resulted...
Cerium titanate CeTi2O6 was prepared by a new soft chemistry route in aqueous solution. A suite of characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron were employed to investigate the brannerite structure formation its bulk properties. The synthesized powder formed crystal upon calcination at temperatures as low 800 °C. Samples sintered 1350 °C possess high level crystallinity. absorption near-edge results...
