China has experienced rapid agricultural development over recent decades, accompanied by increased fertilizer consumption in croplands; yet, the trend and drivers of associated nitrous oxide (N2 O) emissions remain uncertain. The primary sources this uncertainty are coarse spatial variation activity data incomplete model representation N2 O response to management. Here, we provide new data-driven estimates cropland-N2 across 1990-2014, compiled using a global flux observation dataset,...

Abstract Unintended reactive nitrogen (N) losses from agriculture, energy and transportation pose significant environmental hazards, including eutrophication, acidification, water air pollution, biodiversity loss, human health risks climate change. The concept of a footprint (NF) emerges as pivotal metric, reflecting potential N in the entire production-consumption chain goods services used by an individual within defined timeframe. In pioneering assessment per capita NF Ukraine, key...

PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on ecosystems of Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger achievement SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, a meta-analysis existing literature pressure/impact/knowledge summarized in tables related MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. comparative assessment...

Between 2004 and 2012, populations of Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) rapa whelk (Rapana venosa) from the coastal waters Zmiinyi Island (Black Sea) were assessed for distribution, abundance, size, age characteristics. Compared to 2004–2005, bed cover in 2012 decreased by 75.6%, maximum depth occurrence reduced 22–25 m 10–12 m, total biomass declined 44.6%. There was a concurrent decrease abundance demersal fishes dependent upon mussels as prey. We concluded that invasive has...

Burning of fossil fuels, application fertilisers, and livestock farming have greatly increased emissions reactive nitrogen (N). The consequent increase in atmospheric deposition N compounds has compromised air, soil water quality, ecosystems, human health wellbeing. Sulphate aerosols also affect climate dynamics by scattering solar radiation, leading to surface cooling and, indirectly, cloud formation precipitation. During 2021 (the pre-war year), the rates total over lower, middle upper...

Abstract Monitoring aquatic vegetation, including both floating and emergent types, plays a crucial role in understanding the dynamics of freshwater ecosystems. Our research focused on Lower Dniester Basin Southern Ukraine, covering approximately 1800 square kilometers steppe plains wetlands. We applied traditional machine learning algorithms, specifically random forest boosting trees, to analyze Sentinel-2 satellite imagery for segmenting vegetation into types. methodology was validated...
