In southern Europe, land abandonment and an unbalanced investment toward fire suppression instead of prevention has gradually increased wildfire risk, which calls for a paradigm change in management policies. Here we combined scenario analysis, landscape modelling, economic tools to identify land-use policies would reduce the expected wildfire-related losses Transboundary Biosphere Reserve 'Gerês-Xurés' (Spain-Portugal). To do so, applied least-cost-plus-net-value-change approach estimated...
Wildfires have greater impacts on socially vulnerable communities. Identifying these communities and enhancing understanding of what influences their susceptibility to wildfires can guide the design spatially targeted strategies in preparedness, mitigation plans, adaptation strategies. This paper investigates heterogeneous spatial coincidence social vulnerability wildfire risk Galicia (Spain) at municipality level. Results show that socioeconomic status, rates dependence programs, household...
Increased large and high-intensity wildfires cause socioeconomic ecological impacts, which demand improved landscape management approaches in both societal dimensions are integrated. Engaging society fire requires a better understanding of stakeholder perceptions management. We analyze about wildfire-landscape interactions abandoned rural landscapes southern Europe, how the land should be managed to reduce wildfire hazard ensure long-term supply ecosystem services these fire-prone regions....
We report daily time series models containing both temporal and spatiotemporal lags, which are applied to forecasting intentional wildfires in Galicia, Spain. Models estimated independently for each of the 19 forest districts Galicia using a 1999–2003 training dataset evaluated out-of-sample with 2004–06 dataset. Poisson autoregressive order P – PAR(P) significantly out-perform competing alternative over in-sample datasets, reducing root-mean-squared errors by an average 15%. static included...
Forest fires causes and motivations are poorly understood in southern south-eastern Europe. This research aims to identify how experts perceive the different of forest as defined classification proposed by European Commission 2013. A panel (N = 271) was gathered from EU Southern Member States (France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain) Central (Switzerland) Europe (Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Republic North Macedonia, Turkey). Experts were asked answer a questionnaire score importance...
It is crucial for fire prevention policies to assess the spatial patterns of human-started fires and their relationship with geographical socioeconomic aspects. This study uses reports period 1988-2006 in Galicia, Spain, analyze distribution human-induced risk attending causes underlying motivations associated ignitions. Our results show that there are four distinctive types municipalities this region according incidence intentional agricultural-livestock fires, pyromaniacal behavior,...
Abstract Cost minimization theory suggests national demand equations for paper and paperboard in which is a negative function of the price paperboard, positive gross product. A dynamic version this model was estimated with data from European Union countries, newsprint, printing writing paper, other paperboard. Country-by-country proved unstable. Pooling across dummy variables to account fixed country effects, led well defined short-term long-term elasticities respect The hypothesis that...
This study quantifies part of the short-term or immediate economic losses (excluding non-use passive losses) caused by wildfires in Galicia during 2006. The background empirical work is based on ecosystem service approach that values services not provided due to existence wildfires. obtained results show are about 300 millions euros (depending scenario analysis) for period August-December
Research to date has not examined how the impacts of arrests manifest across space and time in environmental crimes. We evaluate whether reduce or merely spatiotemporally displace intentional illegal outdoor firesetting. Using municipality-level daily wildfire count data from Galicia, Spain, 1999 2014, we develop spatiotemporal ignition models agricultural, non-agricultural total wildfires as functions lagged arrests, election cycle, seasonal day indicators, meteorological factors...
In Galicia (Spain), wildfires are one of the main environmental problems, with an annual average close to 8,600 forest fires between 1999 and 2008.Most these intentionally ignited. It is therefore crucial for fire prevention policies assess human-started their relationship socioeconomic aspects. In this paper we focus on spatial pattern human presence in territory as important determinant ignitions. We identify, classified map wildland-urban interface (WUI) risk by types WUI a Galician county...
Texto resumen.
Oil infrastructure poses a significant risk to the people living in its vicinity. Despite numerous studies conducted on impact of industry's accidents, research into disaster reduction relating oil pipelines that pass through urban areas is still limited. This study addresses this gap using Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System Metropolitan District Quito (Ecuador) as case study. A discrete choice experiment employed assess preferences local population concerning mitigation measures and extent...
Effective disaster risk reduction requires conducting research within communities that gave recognized natural or technological risks, to foster the development of more resilient societies. However, limited information is available regarding perception and preparedness for hazards in disaster-prone urban areas South America. The aim this study investigate factors influence public Trans-Ecuadorian Oil Pipeline System its relationship with household a potential accident Metropolitan District...
