Odour and pheromone perception occurs through a complex series of events, many aspects which have been elucidated in the most recent years. The discovery membrane-bound olfactory receptors, both vertebrates insects, their functional expression heterologous systems shown that they can be directly activated by odorant molecules.

Background Aphids are agricultural pests of great economical interest. Alternatives to insecticides, using semiochemicals, difficult applications. In fact, sex pheromones little use as aphids reproduce partenogenetically most the time. Besides, alarm pheromone, (E)-ß-farnesene for a number species, is synthesize and unstable in environment. The search novel semiochemicals be used population control can efficiently approached through study olfactory system at biochemical level. Recently...

Significance The giant panda, an endangered species and a popular emblem, still conceals puzzling unexplored aspects. It shares with bears, to which it is evolutionary related, carnivorous digestive system but follows strictly herbivorous diet. low energy obtained from such poor food accounts for its slow movements probably, reduced reproductive activity. Feeding mating are regulated by olfaction, poorly investigated in this at the molecular level. Here, we describe two odorant-binding...

Eusocial insects live in teeming societies with thousands of their kin. In this crowded environment, workers combat disease by removing or burying dead diseased nestmates. For honey bees, we found that hygienic brood-removal behavior is triggered two odorants - β-ocimene and oleic acid which are released from brood upon freeze-killing. a co-opted pheromone normally signals larval food-begging, whereas conserved necromone across arthropod taxa. Interestingly, the odorant blend can induce more...

Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are small soluble often associated with chemosensory organs in insects but include members involved other functions, such as pheromone delivery and development. Although the CSPs of sensory have been extensively studied, little is known on their functions parts body. A first screening available databases has identified 70 sequences encoding oriental locust Locusta migratoria manilensis. Applying proteomic analysis, we 17 them abundantly expressed female...

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory (CSPs) are endowed with several different functions besides being carriers for pheromones odorants. Based on a previous report of CSP acting as surfactant in the proboscis moth Helicoverpa armigera, we revealed presence orthologue two other moths Plutella xylostella Chilo suppressalis, well butterflies Papilio machaon Pieris rapae, using immunodetection proteomic analysis. The unusual conservation these across large phylogenetic distances...

Abstract Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are soluble found only in arthropods. Some of them fill the lumen chemosensilla and believed to play a role similar that odorant-binding detection semiochemicals. Other members CSP family have been reported perform different functions, from delivery pheromones development. This report is focused on member (CSP4) highly almost exclusively present proboscis two sibling noctuid species, Helicoverpa armigera H. assulta. We expressed protein bacteria measured...

Large amounts of an odorant-binding protein have been isolated from submaxillary glands mature male pig. This polypeptide molecule is sex-specific, being absent in females. On electrophoretic gels under denaturing conditions it migrated as a broad band with apparent molecular mass around 20 kDa. Electrospray spectrometry revealed the presence three main components, whose differences are not interpretable result any common post-translational modifications, indicating distinct chains....

Chemical stimuli, generally constituted by small volatile organic molecules, are extremely important for the survival of different insect species. In course evolution, insects have developed very sophisticated biochemical systems binding and delivery specific semiochemicals to their cognate membrane-bound receptors. Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) a class soluble present at high concentration in chemosensory organs; they supposed be involved carrying chemical messages from environment this...

Niemann-Pick proteins type C2 (NPC2) are carriers of cholesterol in vertebrates, with a single member each species. The high sequence conservation between mammals and across vertebrates is related to their common function. In contrast, NPC2 arthropods have undergone extensive duplication differentiation, probably under environmental pressure, likely different functions. Recent studies suggested that these might act as for semiochemicals other hydrophobic compounds. this study we focused on...
