Aquatic birds are often used as a health indicator of the marine ecosystem. African penguins living in zoo make good research material they form link between and terrestrial ecosystem terms xenobiotic circulation. Tests were performed on whole herring-the food penguins-as well bird muscle, liver, brain, eggs, feathers guano order to determine total mercury, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, isodrin, endosulfan isomers, sulfate, methoxychlor, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) its metabolites. The aim of the present work was to determine concentration levels, as well accumulation and magnification coefficients, triazine derivatives in herring gulls Baltic grey seals 11 years after a ban on their use EU eight exclusion Poland. Dead birds were collected coastal zone Gulf Gdansk 2010-2012. seals, other hand, from before 2007, when s-triazine still use. Abstract Mercury enters the body of seabirds in its most toxic organic form, i.e. methylmercury, mainly via alimentary tract. Inside body, mercury is transformed into less forms and accumulates internal organs. The process removal from effective during formation new feathers claws, beneficial for bird. presented research was undertaken on account high affinity to keratin – a protein that claws compare concentration levels (Hg TOT ) these structures assess their contribution purification...

Abstract This work presents the results of study on methane emission from sea bottom in coastal zone Puck Bay. The investigations were conducted June through September 2010 at seven sampling sites located along Hel Peninsula. research indicate that flux rates vary periodically. Methane seabed into near-bottom water Bay Peninsula ranged 0.91 mmol m−2 d−1 to 49.15 d−1.

Alimentary exposure is the main factor determining halogenated organic compound pollution of wildlife, with birds’ eggs recognised as bioindicators these contaminants and often used a non-invasive monitoring tool. Comparisons bird species from two aquatic environments, namely marine coastal area (Gdansk Bay) an inland reservoir (Włocławek Dam on Vistula River), indicated significant differences in egg contamination. Herring gull Włocławek had high concentrations highly chlorinated dioxin...

Abstract Due to the limited water exchange, lagoons are particularly prone eutrophication. The consumption of oxygen in this process, coupled with simultaneous enrichment bottom sediments organic matter, reinforces occurrence anaerobic conditions and methanogenic growth. Methanogenic archaea activities cause depolymerization compounds accumulated sediments. As a result such ecosystem transformation, methane might be produced emitted from basin. They detected muscles (ΣHBCD = 42.82 ± 30.65 ng g −1 l.w.) 65.51±27.96 all examined gulls. The α-HBCD isomer dominates types samples. Our study has shown that bodies are less contaminated with HBCD than aquatic birds from other regions world. There was no clear correlation between concentrations sex age birds....
