The organic derivatives of phenol are classed as dangerous compounds, and their presence has been detected in surface water, bottom phytoplankton, zooplankton, mussel well liver muscle fish from the Gulf Gdańsk liver, muscle, guano gulls residing coastal zone this basin. greatest sources bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (OP), 4-nonylphenol (NP) were found to be Vistula River water purification plant Dębogórze. In living organisms, concentrations BPA, OP, NP ranged between limit...
Aquatic birds are often used as a health indicator of the marine ecosystem. African penguins living in zoo make good research material they form link between and terrestrial ecosystem terms xenobiotic circulation. Tests were performed on whole herring-the food penguins-as well bird muscle, liver, brain, eggs, feathers guano order to determine total mercury, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, isodrin, endosulfan isomers, sulfate, methoxychlor, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) its metabolites. In...
The aim of the present work was to determine concentration levels, as well accumulation and magnification coefficients, triazine derivatives in herring gulls Baltic grey seals 11 years after a ban on their use EU eight exclusion Poland. Dead birds were collected coastal zone Gulf Gdansk 2010-2012. seals, other hand, from before 2007, when s-triazine still use. Triazine herbicides (atrazine, simazine, propazine, terbutrine, prometrone, prometrine ametrine) found muscles livers mammals also...
The present study estimated hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) as a sum of three main isomers (α, β, and γ) tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) from Gdansk Zoo their sole food, Baltic herring (Clupea harengus), Bay. average concentration HBCD whole was 22.0 ± 9.9 ng/g lw, whereas TBBPA approximately 10-fold lower (2.3 1.3 lw). Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were also found muscle liver herring. daily dietary exposure the to 252.9 113.7 ng, for it 26.3 14.9...
Abstract Mercury enters the body of seabirds in its most toxic organic form, i.e. methylmercury, mainly via alimentary tract. Inside body, mercury is transformed into less forms and accumulates internal organs. The process removal from effective during formation new feathers claws, beneficial for bird. presented research was undertaken on account high affinity to keratin – a protein that claws compare concentration levels (Hg TOT ) these structures assess their contribution purification...
Abstract The aim of this study was to estimate the residue chlorinated pesticides in edible fish caught Gulf Gdańsk and Vistula Lagoon. highest mean concentrations total DDT were found muscles salmon (331.45 ng g−1 lw.) sabre carp (306.29 Lagoon, cod (309.88 herring (304.86 from Gdańsk. Moreover, it discovered that following present fish: metabolites (pp’-DDE pp’-DDD isomers) as well hexachlorobenzene its endrin, dieldrin, α-endosulfan isomers methoxychlor. Pesticides higher livers than...
Concentrations of 16 PAHs different molecular weight and carcinogenic potency were measured in PM2.5 aerosols collected the coastal zone southern Baltic Sea (Gdynia, Poland) during end heating beginning non-heating season 2012. Obtained results showed that coal combustion (pyrogenic source) contributed to highest emission season. However, similar concentrations highly detected period. The analysis prevailing wind directions, air mass trajectories diagnostic PAH ratios revealed addition land...
The aim of this study was to assess the effect a marine diet on accumulation, magnification, maternal transfer and detoxification chlorinated organic pollutants highest trophic level in Baltic Sea. Results showed that birds eating whole herring received doses herbicides > pesticides fungicides polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) dibenzo-para-dioxins (PCDDs). toxicity PCDD/Fs penguin's 24-h alimentary exposure estimated at 7.77 ng TEQ-WHO2005. Among pesticides, concentrations—both fish...
Abstract This work presents the results of study on methane emission from sea bottom in coastal zone Puck Bay. The investigations were conducted June through September 2010 at seven sampling sites located along Hel Peninsula. research indicate that flux rates vary periodically. Methane seabed into near-bottom water Bay Peninsula ranged 0.91 mmol m−2 d−1 to 49.15 d−1.
Abstract The aim of this project was to study the fate chemically persistent organochlorine xenobiotics in marine link food web, between penguins and herrings (Clupea harengus), which are only for Spheniscus demersus from Gdańsk Zoo. Concentrations hexachlorobenzene (HCBz), pentachlorobenzene (PCBz), trichlorobenzene (TCBz) γ-HCH isomer were determined Baltic herrings, muscles, fat liver penguins, unhatched eggs, contour feathers guano. highest concentrations fungicides observed HCBz....
The study presents the analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and dioxin-like biphenyls (dl-PCB) in fish seabirds from Baltic Sea area Arctic region (the Svalbard Archipelago). Long-time studies revealed no significant temporal trends PCDD/F dl-PCB concentrations Sea. Trace amounts were detected as an evidence their anthropogenic sources temperate zone, however congener profile cod was entirely different than fish. On contrary, both profiles comparable polar...
Alimentary exposure is the main factor determining halogenated organic compound pollution of wildlife, with birds’ eggs recognised as bioindicators these contaminants and often used a non-invasive monitoring tool. Comparisons bird species from two aquatic environments, namely marine coastal area (Gdansk Bay) an inland reservoir (Włocławek Dam on Vistula River), indicated significant differences in egg contamination. Herring gull Włocławek had high concentrations highly chlorinated dioxin...
Abstract Due to the limited water exchange, lagoons are particularly prone eutrophication. The consumption of oxygen in this process, coupled with simultaneous enrichment bottom sediments organic matter, reinforces occurrence anaerobic conditions and methanogenic growth. Methanogenic archaea activities cause depolymerization compounds accumulated sediments. As a result such ecosystem transformation, methane might be produced emitted from basin. Chemical studies conducted 2010 were focused on...
Abstract In this work, data on methanogenic Archaea communities in sediment from the coastal area of Puck Bay were investigated. Sediments collected along Hel Peninsula areas characterized by occurrence gas bubbles. Based analysis molecular markers, presence a specific gene was detected at all stations. Further research involved cloning and sequencing DNA. comparison obtained genetic sequences with existing databases, it confirmed that nucleotide belonged to domain Archaea. Furthermore,...
Abstract Muscles and livers of herring gulls ( Larus argentatus ) found in the coastal area southern Baltic Sea were tested for presence hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) isomers. They detected muscles (ΣHBCD = 42.82 ± 30.65 ng g −1 l.w.) 65.51±27.96 all examined gulls. The α-HBCD isomer dominates types samples. Our study has shown that bodies are less contaminated with HBCD than aquatic birds from other regions world. There was no clear correlation between concentrations sex age birds....
