Abstract The European CORDEX (EURO-CORDEX) initiative is a large voluntary effort that seeks to advance regional climate and Earth system science in Europe. As part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) - Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), it shares broader goals providing model evaluation projection framework improving communication with both General Circulation Model (GCM) data user communities. EURO-CORDEX oversees design coordination ongoing ensembles...

Abstract Machine learning is a growing field of research with many applications. It provides series techniques able to solve complex nonlinear problems, and that has promoted their application for statistical downscaling. Intercomparison exercises other classical methods have so far shown promising results. Nevertheless, evaluation studies downscaling neglect the analysis extrapolation capability. In this study, we aim make wakeup call community about potential risks using machine climate...

Tropical cyclones form only under specific environmental conditions. Anthropogenic climate change might alter the geographical areas where tropical can develop. Using an ensemble of regional models, we find increase in extremes cyclone intensity over Mediterranean Sea a scenario. At least for most sensitive model, is clearly associated with formation cyclones. Previous studies did not evidence changes projected (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2007; Walsh, 2004; Lionello et al.,...

Abstract. This work uses a network of GPS stations over Europe from which homogenized integrated water vapor (IWV) dataset has been retrieved, completed with colocated temperature and precipitation measurements specific to (i) estimate the biases six regional climate models in terms humidity; (ii) understand their origins; (iii) finally assess impact these on frequency occurrence precipitation. Abstract. The Pyrenees, located in the transition zone of Atlantic and Mediterranean climates, constitute a paradigmatic example mountains undergoing rapid changes environmental conditions, with potential impact on availability water resources, mainly for downstream populations. Abstract There are two main approaches to downscale global climate projections: dynamical and statistical downscaling. Both families have been widely evaluated, but intercomparison studies between the scarce, usually limited temperature precipitation. In this work, we present a comparison downscaling model (SDM) based on machine learning six regional models (RCMs) from EURO‐CORDEX, for five variables of interest: temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity solar radiation under climatic...

Abstract Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become one of the state‐of‐the‐art techniques for downscaling climate projections. They are being applied under Perfect‐Prognosis (trained in a historical period with observations) and hybrid approaches (as Regional Climate Models (RCMs) emulators), satisfactory results. Nevertheless, two important aspects not been, to our knowledge, properly assessed yet: (1) their performance as emulators other Earth System (ESMs) different used training,...
