Abstract The European CORDEX (EURO-CORDEX) initiative is a large voluntary effort that seeks to advance regional climate and Earth system science in Europe. As part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) - Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), it shares broader goals providing model evaluation projection framework improving communication with both General Circulation Model (GCM) data user communities. EURO-CORDEX oversees design coordination ongoing ensembles...
Abstract Machine learning is a growing field of research with many applications. It provides series techniques able to solve complex nonlinear problems, and that has promoted their application for statistical downscaling. Intercomparison exercises other classical methods have so far shown promising results. Nevertheless, evaluation studies downscaling neglect the analysis extrapolation capability. In this study, we aim make wakeup call community about potential risks using machine climate...
Tropical cyclones form only under specific environmental conditions. Anthropogenic climate change might alter the geographical areas where tropical can develop. Using an ensemble of regional models, we find increase in extremes cyclone intensity over Mediterranean Sea a scenario. At least for most sensitive model, is clearly associated with formation cyclones. Previous studies did not evidence changes projected (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2007; Walsh, 2004; Lionello et al.,...

Abstract The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) is responsible for the elaboration of downscaled climate projections over Spain to feed Second National Plan Adaptation Climate Change (PNACC‐2). main objective this article establish a comparison among five statistical downscaling methods developed at AEMET: (1) Analog, (2) Regression, (3) Artificial Neural Networks, (4) Support Vector Machines and (5) Kernel Ridge Regression. This has been carried out under present conditions with perfect...
Abstract. This work uses a network of GPS stations over Europe from which homogenized integrated water vapor (IWV) dataset has been retrieved, completed with colocated temperature and precipitation measurements specific to (i) estimate the biases six regional climate models in terms humidity; (ii) understand their origins; (iii) finally assess impact these on frequency occurrence precipitation. The evaluated simulations have performed framework HYMEX/Med-CORDEX programs cover Mediterranean...
Abstract. The Pyrenees, located in the transition zone of Atlantic and Mediterranean climates, constitute a paradigmatic example mountains undergoing rapid changes environmental conditions, with potential impact on availability water resources, mainly for downstream populations. High-resolution probabilistic climate change projections precipitation temperature are crucial element stakeholders to make well-informed decisions adaptation new conditions. In this line, we have generated...
Abstract There are two main approaches to downscale global climate projections: dynamical and statistical downscaling. Both families have been widely evaluated, but intercomparison studies between the scarce, usually limited temperature precipitation. In this work, we present a comparison downscaling model (SDM) based on machine learning six regional models (RCMs) from EURO‐CORDEX, for five variables of interest: temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity solar radiation under climatic...

Abstract Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become one of the state‐of‐the‐art techniques for downscaling climate projections. They are being applied under Perfect‐Prognosis (trained in a historical period with observations) and hybrid approaches (as Regional Climate Models (RCMs) emulators), satisfactory results. Nevertheless, two important aspects not been, to our knowledge, properly assessed yet: (1) their performance as emulators other Earth System (ESMs) different used training,...
Abstract Wind energy is susceptible to global climate change because it could alter the wind patterns. Then, improvement of our knowledge field variability crucial optimize use resources in a given region. Here, we quantify effects on surface speed over Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands using an ensemble four regional models driven by model. Regions with coherent temporal each are identified analysed cluster analysis. These regions continuous model exhibit high degree overlap across...

Abstract A sensitivity analysis of a moist convection case‐study the 2005 West African monsoon has been performed with limited‐area model PROMES. In control simulation, soil moisture was initialized based on European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) moisture. relatively wet patch appears over an area that affected later by passage squall line. The simulation is able to reproduce line crosses this surface, which makes it possible analyse modelled convective system increase up...
Abstract In this work we use the mean‐variance portfolio optimization, using as input power derived from wind and density results of meteorological model simulations (ERA‐Interim reanalysis), to minimize variability produced in a large region. The methodology involves selecting placement farms on high spatial resolution grid. We used EU‐28 region check method perform sensitivity tests. studied influence ratio between total installed whole domain (P t ) maximum that can be per cell mi yield....
