In March 2014 a group of early career researchers and academics from São Paulo state the UK met at University Campinas to participate in workshop on 'Responsible Innovation Governance Socially Controversial Technologies'. this Perspective we describe key reflections observations discussions, paying particular attention discourse responsible innovation cross-cultural perspective. We number important tensions, paradoxes opportunities that emerged over three days workshop.

Based on criticism of the “ethical, legal and social implications” (ELSI) paradigm, researchers in science technology studies (STS) have begun to create move into “post-ELSI” spaces. In this paper, we pool our experiences working towards collaborative practices with colleagues engineering disciplines field synthetic biology. We identify a number different roles that taken, been assumed take, or had foisted upon us as sought develop post-ELSI practices. argue situation is characterised by...

In this paper we identify five rules of thumb for interdisciplinary collaboration across the natural and social sciences. We link these to efforts move away from 'ethical, legal issues' framework interdisciplinarity towards a post-ELSI collaborative space. It is in trying open up such space that need for: experimentation, taking risks, reflexivity, opening-up discussions unshared goals neighbourliness.

A prominent imaginary of synthetic biology is the sustainability bio-based technologies. In this paper, authors discuss various reports, papers, and activities in relation to a core set principles sustainability, paying particular attention concept “prudent vigilance” as introduced by report U.S. Presidential Commission for Study Bioethical Issues. The deployment of gene drives is emerging as an alternative for protecting endangered species, controlling agricultural pests, and reducing vector-borne diseases. This paper reports on a workshop held in February 2016 to explore the complex intersection political, economic, ethical, ecological risk issues associated with drives. Workshop participants were encouraged use systems thinking mapping describe connections among social, policy, variables they intersect within governance systems. In...

The widespread use of digital image-processing software to prepare images for publication is a matter growing unease among journal editors, particularly in the biosciences. Concerned not so much with intentional fraud, but rather routine and ‘innocent’ yet inappropriate alteration images, several high-profile science journals have recently introduced guidelines authors regarding image manipulation, are implementing in-house forensic procedures screening submitted images. Such interventions...

Synthetic biology represents a recent attempt to bring engineering principles and practices working with biology. In practice, the nature of relationship between in synthetic is subject ongoing debate. The disciplines are typically seen involve different ways knowing doing, embody assumptions objectives. Accounts biomedicalization, biotechnology, biopower, biocapital, and bioeconomy tend to agree that twentieth- twenty-first-century life sciences transform the object biology, biological. Amidst so much transformation, we explore attempts stabilize biological through standards. We ask: how do standards handle in transformation?
