Abstract Ice-walled melt ponds on the surfaces of active valley-floor rock glaciers and Matthes (Little Ice Age) moraines in southern Sierra Nevada indicate that most these landforms consist glacier ice under thin ( ca. 1 - 10 m) but continuous covers rock-fall-generated debris. These debris blankets effectively insulate underlying greatly reduce rates ablation relative to uncovered ice. Such insulation explains observations ice-cored Sierra, actually debris-covered glaciers, are apparently...
New radiocarbon ages for Sierra Nevada deglaciation, the first 10 Be measurements from Laurentide terminal moraine, and calculations based on paleomagnetic field strength have potential to substantially improve accuracy of cosmogenic age estimates. Specifically, three new constraints apply interpretation measured abundances in situ produced 10Be 26Al: (1) A suite minimum-limiting dates indicates that was deglaciated at least several thousand years earlier than assumed when Nishiizumi et al....

Accumulation of 35S-radioactivity by the thyroid gland was found after administration equimolar doses 35S-labelled thiouracil, methylthiouracil, propyl methimazole and carbimazole to rats. Thin-layer chromatography showed an accumulation parent drug in case methimazole, propylthiouracil, methylthiouracil thiouracil. When given, demonstrated thyroid. Propylthiouracil produced largest amount thiouracil least. In man both accumulated normal propylthiouracil. six tumors little or no antithyroid found.
Rock glaciers, common in many alpine and polar regions, have poorly understood internal structure, dynamics, origins. A renewal of interest the climatic geomorphic significance these striking landforms has served to intensify a long‐standing controversy surrounding genesis rock glaciers. The controversy, which began more than 30 years ago, resolved into two primary viewpoints. One holds that glaciers form through continuum glacial periglacial processes encompass features vary from...
Galena Creek rock glacier (GCRG), northwest Wyoming, exhibits most of the classic characteristics glaciers. Clean ice with silty bands was found beneath a c. 1 m thick debris mantle by Potter. He inferred that is glacigenic, originating in small snowfield cirque at head GCRG. This view challenged Barsch, who asserted GCRG "permafrost" origin. Since then has become lightning rod for opponents and proponents glacigenic model We review evidence here.Movement marks emplaced on 1960s were...
Abstract A 141m ice core was recovered from Combatant Col (51.385° N, 125.258° W; 3000ma.s.l.), Mount Waddington, Coast Mountains, British Columbia, Canada. Records of black carbon, dust, lead and water stable isotopes demonstrate that unambiguous seasonality is preserved throughout the core, despite summer surface snowmelt temperate ice. High accumulation rates at site (>4 m eq. a -1 ) limit modification annual stratigraphy by percolation meltwater. The ice-core record spans period...
SUMMARY 35 S‐methimazole (MMI), S‐carbimazole or S‐propylthiouracil (PTU) were given orally to fifty‐five patients at various times up 12 h before surgical thyroidectomy. The amount of S radioactivity and labelled drug in thyroid plasma samples was measured. Intrathyroidal inhibition organic binding iodine by MMI, carbimazole PTU measured after intravenous administration 131 I, 132 I 125 I‐iodide. After S‐MMI the serum (T/S) ratio greater thyrotoxic glands than non‐toxic adenoma tissue....
Lichenometric ages of active glacigenic rock glaciers and Matthes (Little Ice Age) moraines, together with sediment cores from basins below these landforms, provide evidence for a glacier advance -3000 yr ago in the Sierra Nevada, California. Diameters largest lichens (70-108 mm) on Mendel indicate that it began forming well before onset Little Age (LIA) (-700 BP). Smaller (30-45 moraines Darwin Conness suggest they formed during LIA. The apparent lack pre-LIA Holocene clean Nevada...
A 9.5 m ice core was extracted from beneath the surficial debris cover of a rock glacier at Galena Creek, northwestern Wyoming. The contains clean, bubble‐rich with silty layers spaced roughly 20 cm intervals. are similar in appearance to those typical alpine glaciers, reflecting concentration by melting surface during summer ablation season. Profiles stable isotope concentrations and electrical conductivity measurements provide independent evidence for association layers. These observations...
Anyone who spends much time above the treeline has probably seen rock glaciers and paused to wonder about them. Their curious occasionally spectacular forms (Figure 1) occur in alpine polar regions throughout world, yet remains uncertain how they develop. A core of ice recently recovered from a glacier Absaroka Mountains northwestern Wyoming vividly illustrates several important aspects glaciers. At least some are form debris‐covered glacier, original isotopic stratigraphy may be preserved...
Ninety patients who had a recurrence of thyrotoxicosis after thyroidectomy have been reviewed. All 10 second operation and 18 out 20 treated with full course antithyroid drugs relapsed. These results differ greatly from the treatment first episode thyrotoxicosis, whether by or drugs. Radioiodine is choice in this group patients, despite high incidence hypothyroidism.
